Empowering the Girl Child Through Education, Health and Opportunity

Empowering the girl child lies at the heart of Vedanta’s social impact agenda. Across its operational regions in India, Vedanta implements long-term, community-rooted programmes that support girls through every stage of their journey, from early childhood and adolescence to education, skill development and leadership. By addressing education, health, nutrition, sports and livelihoods together, these initiatives help girls grow into confident, independent individuals who can shape their own futures.

Vedanta’s approach recognises that empowerment is not a single intervention, but a continuum of support. By working closely with families, schools, healthcare systems and local institutions, Vedanta ensures that girls are supported today while being equipped with the skills, confidence and opportunities needed for tomorrow.

Project Nand Ghar

Project Nand Ghar forms the foundation of Vedanta’s work with young girls. These modernised centres across 17 states in India integrate early childhood education with nutrition, healthcare access and community engagement. For 2 lakh young girls in over 11,000 Nand Ghars, this means stronger school readiness, better health outcomes and a safe, stimulating environment that encourages curiosity and learning from an early age.

As girls grow older, Nand Ghars evolve into vibrant community hubs. Adolescent girls and women access awareness programmes on health and nutrition, digital learning tools, vocational training and livelihood support. This continuum of care strengthens families’ belief in girls’ education and self-reliance, creating an ecosystem that nurtures confidence and aspiration.

Strengthening Education Through Digital and Classroom Support

Education remains a powerful enabler of change. Across Vedanta’s operational regions, initiatives such as Project Vidyagraha, Project Shiksha and Project Vriddhi are strengthening foundational learning in government schools. Digital education platforms complement classroom teaching through structured lessons, concept-based learning and doubt-clearing support, helping girls overcome learning gaps and build academic confidence.

In rural and mining-adjacent communities, additional teacher support, teacher capacity- building programmes and improved school infrastructure have helped create more engaging learning environments. Exposure to science centres, digital labs and career guidance has expanded horizons for girl students, encouraging them to pursue higher education and future-ready careers.

Healthcare and Well-being

Good health is essential for sustained educational and social participation. Through BALCO Medical Centre and other extensive healthcare initiatives, adolescent girls and young women receive access to preventive healthcare, awareness sessions and screening programmes. These efforts focus on early detection, health education and continuity of care, enabling girls to continue their studies and daily lives with confidence.

Targeted interventions addressing adolescent reproductive health, menstrual hygiene and nutrition further support dignity and well-being. Awareness sessions, community health camps and sustainable practices such as menstrual hygiene education and nutritional gardens help break taboos and empower girls to make informed choices about their bodies and health.

Building Confidence Through Sports

Sports play a transformative role in building confidence, discipline and leadership among girls. Through Vedanta Sports initiatives and academies such as football, archery and athletics programmes, girls from underserved regions gain access to structured training, professional coaching and competitive platforms. The Sesa Football Academy’s senior women’s team from Goa has earned its maiden qualification for the Indian Women’s League in 2026. The Zinc Football Girls Academy in Udaipur is India's first state of the art residential football academy for girls.

These programmes challenge traditional gender norms by positioning sports as a viable and empowering pathway for girls. Participation builds resilience and self-belief, while success stories inspire families and communities to support girls’ ambitions beyond conventional expectations.

Skills, Livelihoods and Digital Inclusion

Skill development initiatives under Vedanta Foundation and site-led CSR programmes create pathways to financial independence for young women. From digital literacy and computer training to vocational skills in apparel, beauty and wellness and technical trades, these programmes are aligned with local market needs and employment opportunities.

Digital learning centres, vocational training hubs and employment-linked skilling programmes help girls and young women transition from education to livelihoods. For those who faced early educational disruptions, these initiatives offer a second chance to rebuild confidence, earn sustainable incomes and contribute meaningfully to household stability.

Community-Led Gender Empowerment

Changing mindsets is central to lasting impact. Community-driven initiatives such as menstrual health programmes, Kishori clubs and school-based awareness campaigns foster open dialogue around gender, health and education. Engaging both girls and boys helps build supportive environments where dignity, equality and opportunity are shared values.

Together, these initiatives reflect Vedanta’s belief that empowering the girl child is not just a social imperative, but a cornerstone of sustainable nation-building. When girls are educated, healthy, confident and economically independent, the impact extends beyond individuals to families, communities and the economy at large.
